Foundations for Mindfulness:
The Art of Meditation

led by
David Bornstein
IMT Dharma Leader

We live in a time of unprecedented disharmony and distraction. Most of us move through our days careening from one task to the next, absorbed in news of the day, our own incessant thoughts, and our ubiquitous gadgets. The practice of mindfulness meditation teaches us how to simply rest in the present moment.

Decades of scientific research validate that regular mindfulness meditation increases focus and happiness, while decreasing anxiety, depression, and self-judgment. But practicing this ancient technique in the context of Buddhist teachings offers us so much more. Buddhism is a vast, rich tradition, which can be summarized in a famous and pithy quote from the Buddha: “I teach only two things: suffering and the end of suffering.” When paired with compassion, mindfulness is the key that unlocks deeper understanding of ourselves, transforming our unwholesome habits of mind and heart, and enabling us to live more in harmony with things just as they are.

Foundations for Mindfulness: The Art of Meditation is for anyone who wants to begin or maintain a regular meditation practice. There will be six weekly sessions which include guided meditations, teachings, small group exercises, and Q&A. You will learn how to practice mindfulness of the breath and body, thoughts and feelings, how to work with obstacles, and the practice of Loving Kindness. This class is suitable for new and experienced meditators.

David Bornstein (he/him) began a dedicated Buddhist meditation practice in 1997. He has practiced mostly in the Theravada tradition at Spirit Rock Meditation Center (SRMC) and Insight Meditation Society (IMS), and also attended several Zen sesshins at the San Diego Zen Center. He has sat dozens of silent retreats, ranging in length from several days to six weeks, and will sit a two month retreat at the Forest Refuge in Barre, MA later this summer. David has completed two two-year trainings (SRMC Dedicated Practitioner’s Program in 2016, and the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program in 2019), and is a certified Mindfulness Meditation teacher. He was also a member of SRMC’s sixth Community Dharma Leader (CDL) training before it was cut short by the pandemic. He has accepted the invitation to apply for CDL7, which would run from January 2025 - January 2027.

David has an easy, welcoming teaching style. Students find him authentic and trustworthy, and appreciate the way he shares from his own life to illustrate Buddhist teachings. David lives in Tucson with his wife and daughter.
