Most of the time, we tether our happiness to the presence of wealth, success, approval or praise. This is the human tendency. What we discover in meditation is that making our happiness contingent on external conditions is a futile endeavor. Instead, we find that happiness arises quite naturally in a mind supremely settled in the present. This is what the Buddha discovered and taught, and this kind of happiness is completely available for us as well. Mindfulness is the gateway, revealing a spectrum of happiness from the relative states of well-being in mind and body to the absolute Bliss of Being itself.
