“The Four Heavenly Messengers” is a well-known story about the Buddha. At the age of 29, young Siddhartha traveled beyond his family's castle walls, encountering profound suffering and spiritual inspiration. For the rest of his life, he would spend his days teaching what he learned.
He encouraged his students to contemplate five truths each day:
I am of the nature to grow old. There is no way to escape aging.
I am of the nature to become sick. There is no way to escape illness.
I am of the nature to die. There is no way to escape death.
Everything I love and all that is dear to me are impermanent. There is no way to escape being separated from them.
My actions are my only true possessions. I am the owner of my actions, the heir of my actions. There is no way to escape their consequences.
Contemplating old age, sickness and loss goes against our cultural norms, but this practice can bring vividness, gratitude, resilience, and wisdom into daily life.
This 4-Week Practice Support Group (PSG) includes guided meditation, Dharma talks, and time for inquiry. Suitable for practitioners of all experience levels.
