No Time to Lose

A Community Conversation about Climate Change with IMT Guiding Teacher Anna Douglas

Climate crisis, climate emergency! species extinction!! Strong words are being used by increasingly alarmed scientists, educators, activists who see a threat to our planet basically being denied or ignored by those in power who could, if they acted, stop or greatly ameliorate, the warming of our planetary eco-system. Many of us respond to the rhetoric with overwhelm, confusion, despair, helplessness, or we simply go numb. As with all types of suffering, the teachings of Dharma give us other options in how to respond to the growing un-ease caused by changes in the climate. Through mindfulness and our deep wish to live in harmony with life, we learn how to work with the many obstructions to wholesome living rooted in greed, hatred and delusion.

We cannot face the collective problem of climate change solely as an individual – it requires a collective response. As a community of like-minded people we can “pool” our wisdom and compassion through a process of deep conversation with each other. Anna will introduce and lead us in an experience of the practice of Council. It is an ancient sacred ceremony found in many indigenous cultures . She was trained to facilitate the ceremony of Council at the Ojai Foundation, in 1995. Participating in Council requires deep listening, a valuing of truth, respect for the wisdom and integrity of each participant, and openness to include all points of view. The effect of being in a Council is usually one of feeling more connected and more at ease, more visible as a valued member of the group. It is a way to access our shared wisdom and empower a creative response to difficulties.

This may be the first of many Councils to help guide our response to climate change.

The morning will be mostly time to practice sitting and walking meditation in silence, with a short dharma talk before lunch. After lunch and a brief rest, we will go into the ceremony of Council which will take 90-120 minutes.

We will end our time together with feedback, a short sit, and dedication of merit. Please join!

To begin to explore this topic of Climate Change, you are invited to watch an inspiring documentary called Paris to Pittsburgh by National Geographic. It addresses how Americans are working towards real solutions to the Climate Crisis. You can stream this video on Amazon Prime Video for $6.99. Watch it with a friend.
